The Joys!

Helmut and I went for a great ride in the Sandilands today. Perfect day – not too hot, horseflies on the wane, no mosquitoes – until I broke a spoke in my rear wheel, then did a couple of endos, and the finale – broke my rear derailleur hanger. I stood there staring at my rear derailleur dragging in the sand! Figured I’d have to walk back the 9kms we’d already ridden into the bush. As I walked, enjoying the beautiful day, I realized maybe I could change my mtn. bike into a fixie, so sitting in the sand Helmut and I took a bunch of links out of the chain and turned my bike into a fixie. A hard way to finally get to ride a fixie, but it worked! Made it back to tell the tale.

From a wannabe fixie rider.

About McShorty

He started out riding trails on his CT 26" mountain bike eventually moving to a real mountain bike and added road riding to his menu over the last few years. He would like to scale the barricades put before him at times, but hasn't always succeeded!

  1. Phew, as I read this, for a moment I thought the “finale” was going to be a broken collar bone. Creative thinking guys! 9K would’ve been a long hike.

  2. Have to correct you Jim – it’s MacGyver…I used to have a wee little crush on ole Richard Dean Anderson… 😉
Yes, 9 K in the sand wouldn’t have been pleasant at all! I recently hoofed back from in front of Southland Church back to Mitchell after flatting out and not wanting to deal with the 4th flat tire that week.
Patrick has since fixed that wheel up very nicely for me!
