About McShorty

He started out riding trails on his CT 26" mountain bike eventually moving to a real mountain bike and added road riding to his menu over the last few years. He would like to scale the barricades put before him at times, but hasn't always succeeded!

  1. Shorty—It’s too bad that the paddling films are on March 13, because Pete and I have entered a winter bike race across Lake Winnipeg and back (Grand Marais to Gimli and back–around 60 kms. total), on March 11. Hopefully we won’t need any paddling skills.

  2. Wow, you guys better be well prepared. Can’t imagine how ugly that ride could get with any amount of wind and a bit of snow. I don’t even like crossing that lake on a good sized boat.

  3. Jim, I hope they’re plowing a path for you because I recall Helmut talking about snowmobiling across there years ago and the snow ridges being huge. They could be several feet high in places. Are they marking the route out for you at least? Is this organized by Dr. Popsicle? He walked the length of Lake Winnipeg one winter.

  4. Whew!!!! You guys are scaring me. The route is a groomed snowmobile trail, almost straight across from Grand Marais to Gimli and back, with markers every tenth of a mile. The information and map on it is at:
This event has been a running event in all previous years with a one way crossing from Gimli to Grand Marais (30 kms). This is the first year where a fat bike race is added, with the intent that the 60 km bikers will roughly finish with the 30 km runners at Grand Marais. Hopefully conditions don’t turn out like what Lindsay Gauld is presently experiencing in Alaska (Iditerod–sp??), where they’ve had a huge snow storm and he’s had to push his bike 99% of the time.(57 miles in 42 hours = 1.35 mph). See the Olympia Cycling club website.

  5. You’ll be riding the snowmobile trail – watch out for snowmobilers! Hope they’ve posted signs for them that you guys will be out there. The weather sounds pretty good – they’re forecasting +4C.
