Just a middle-aged man whose blood pressure and cholesterol were out of wack and needed a tuneup, bad. Then I rekindled my love for riding a bike -- just the simple act of turning the cranks. What happened next is I met a lot of neat people who are as nuts as I am.
So here it is March 2017 and it’s too cold to ride bike without covering every square mm of skin, at least for some of the fair weather riders. The 2017 ride schedule has now been posted with the first official ride only 3 weeks away, April 1, 2017. I know time to get ready.
With that I am posting a picture of Jimmy’s bike seat taken last summer when he was out riding with us. Yes this is the same Mr. Fix-it that tried, to some level of success, to manufacture any repair from sunglasses to shorts to helmets and pedals; then there is his bicycle seat pictured below.
And he rode it like that all summer. Don’t know the whole story but I would not recommend that seat on the next Naked Bike ride event!
Last winter I was looking to replace my bike seat and came across a story in Roadbike Rider regarding a bicycle seat for ‘older’ riders. The name of the company is Kontact and after reading through the reviews on Roadbike rider and on the web site I ended up purchasing the seat. I found that it took very little time to break the seat in, was very comfortable and worked well for me all summer.

La Broquerie, MB
Eden’s East-side Road Ride, Saturday 27 August 2016. This is the second annual 80 km ride for Mental Health that starts and ends in La Broquerie, about 11 km east of Steinbach. We’re all set to go with the second East-side Road Ride. Last year being our first ride, we listened and we learned a few things and we’re looking forward to beautiful weather and riding on a beautiful section of road. This road ride is a fund-raiser to support mental health recovery programs for individuals living in our Southern Health region.

In addition, we continue to prepare ourselves for the development of another housing project in the region. This will be a major project that will be in partnership with our provincial government. Due to the fact that we’ve recently been through an election in Manitoba, there will be the period of adjustment again before everyone is back in “road gear”. We look forward to being able to share more information with you as things progress.
While you’re on the ride with us, we’ll feed and water you along the way and if you’ve been with us in last year, you know we have a wind-up at the end of the ride and we get fed and watered again. Come join us! The ride accommodates a wide variety of skill levels without any encouragement of competition but rather of collaboration. Gather some friends together from work, your social group or church and register as a team.

1. Family Fun Route along the LA Barkman Park (Abe’s Hill) bike path in Steinbach starts at 11am.

On a recent ride through the center of Canada (Landmark) with the MIT we needed to stop due to a flat. Standing back and reviewing the process that took place it is evident that we all have roles to play when a flat occurs.
Everyone, the whole ride comes to a stop and the process begins with each of us taking on a role in the tube replacement process.
the rider, whose tire is flat is responsible to get it changed as quickly as possible with all the distractions of the other riders and the pressure to get going again all the while remain calm and cool as the process will be criticized. This often a tough situation and one that everyone isn’t comfortable with. Critical factors include that the tools are used correctly, the tire and tube are removed in an orderly fashion. Removing the old tube installing the new tube then getting the tire seated without pinching the tube. Then getting the tire inflated with the options each of us carries from C02 cartridges to the air pump options. Nervous times!
the bike holder, a critical role so that the bike is safe and the chain, gear cluster and crank do not make contact with the dirt. Usually doesn’t add much in commentary but does look around for other volunteers when his arm begins to pain.
the overseer, another role that is somewhat helpful but not always appreciated, usually his role is to make sure all the various tools, tube and pump are handed over in a timely fashion. It is the ongoing directive commentary that is not always appreciated. This role often provides the ‘backup’ to pump up the tire if the rider gets to tired.
the commentator, in this case with the orange vest. His role is to provide play by play commentary as to what he sees happening in front of him. The ongoing verbal dialog is often filled with colourful stories of past flats and from own personnel experiences. Note, nobody is paying him any attention.
the bystanders, likely the second most critical role. They keep the important discussions going regarding latest antics of our new Prime Minister along with debating the merits of the Chinese immigrants taking the English language test here instead of China or the latest riding shmertz they have used to grease their riding shorts. It is bystanders role to take the group picture wave at the passing public and totally ignore the flat changing process.
It is important to note that the flat was changed in due process and the ride was continued. I need to note that no commentary was provided on the air pump and the action required to make it produce the critical volume of air to fill the tire as that will be left to a future post.

I can just imagine him on a practice run between LaBroquerie and Richer concentrating on getting his line right, working on his spin and speed. Then hears Merle with his loud carbon wheel pulling even, with Curtis right behind him both of them thinking “finally a new MIT rider!”
